A Report On Escort Interpreting Of Vallee De Mai Nature Reserve Of Seychelles

With the deepening development of globalization, tourism has become the major relaxation and entertainment for people. Escort interpreting plays a vital role in facilitating tourist-guide interaction. In the research field of escort interpreting, most scholars tend to take escort interpreting tasks of domestic tourism as the object of the research report. However, this report takes the escort interpreting practice of outbound tourism as the report object aimed at expanding and broadening the field of escort interpreting research.This thesis is a report on escort interpreting practice of outbound tourism. The interpreting task stated in this thesis was received in May of 2014 in Seychelles by the author who takes up the position as the escort interpreter, of which the clients are a group of independent Chinese travelers in Seychelles. The escort interpreting process of Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve on Praslin Island is chosen as the report content of this thesis which describes the author’s interpreting practice, ways of dealing with problems along with post-interpreting reflection.This practice report attaches importance to the elaboration of pre-interpreting preparations, onsite escort interpreting process and the post-interpreting reflection. It demonstrates the pre-interpreting preparations through information collection. Also through the elaboration of the whole interpreting content, the thesis presents the four actual problems the author encountered during the process to the readers, namely cultural differences, unforeseen circumstances, limited vocabulary of the interpreter and accent barriers along with the author’s ways of dealing with them. At last, by elaborating post-interpreting reflection, the report concludes better countermeasures and interpreting techniques including acting and responding flexibly, inferring the meaning based on the context, avoiding sensible topics, transliterating, omitting, interpreting in a interpretative way, using the dictionary as a tool, asking for the addresser’s assistance, practicing different accents and accumulating knowledge. The author writes this thesis in a hope that through her elaboration and report of her personal practice, it will be able to provide assistance and references to other escort interpreters who engage in the tasks of outbound tourism, in the meantime accumulate more practical examples and experiences for scholars in the field of escort interpreting, which ultimately in a way promotes the development of the research in this field.
