A Translation Report On Huxiang Culture

President Xi Jinping said, mutual communication and learning make colorful and rich culture. Chinese culture attracts more and more attention as the economic power and international influence rapidly raise. As one of the most important regional cultures in China, Huxiang Culture is well-known for distinctive features as well as rich cultural connotation and foundation. On the basis of Chu Culture, Huxiang Culture has gradually developed and formed the cultural spirits of simplicity, bravery,pragmatism and self-improvement. Going global is an inevitable choice for the spread of Huxiang Culture. Translation, as a good way of promoting cultural communication,plays an important role in it.This thesis is written on the basis of the translation on Huxiang folk culture,including process description and summary of translation. The source text is excerpted from Huxiang Culture written by Mr. Wen Xuande and Tian Fulong. The book, complied from Huxiang Culture Series, introduces the main content, features and the development of Huxiang Culture, which has been published by Hunan Education Press and reported by many media in August, 2013. Therefore, it is a good and popular book for people who want to know Huxiang Culture. Chapter Nine Unique Ethnic Customs of Primitive Simplicity written by Mr. Zhou Xingyi is chosen as the source text in which it introduces an overview and various distinctive customs of each ethnic group in Hunan.This report is divided into four chapters, including the introduction of the background, the text and the translation theory, the description of the whole process,the analysis of typical cases from the phrase, sentence and paragraph on the basis of Adaptation Theory, the conclusion of translation strategies and methods on the text of folk culture as well as the summary of the experiences and problems. Two translations including the first and the final versions will be presented in the case analysis. By this way can the advantages and disadvantages of different translations and the thoughtprocess of the translator be seen, which helps improve the translation quality. All in all,foreignization should be the translation method for the texts of folk culture according to the background of cultural diversity and the features of folk culture. More specifically, methods including transliteration, annotation, literal translation, image and substitution can be used for the translation of proper nouns. For the translation of culture-loaded words, the methods are annotation, the combination of literal and liberal translation, domestication and omission.
