| The constant development of sports industry in China has enabled the Chinese market to attract more attention from overseas football clubs. The Liverpool Football Club from UK visited Guangzhou in the summer in 2011, and the author has been invited by the officials of Liverpool Chinese website to be the interpreter for the fans gathering commercial activity as well as the interview. In preparation period, relevant materials are collected by means of reading books and surfing internet. In terms of translation-related articles in the sports field, most of the materials in the football field in China are focused on technical terms and translation skills and methods of news abroad, and only few of them are on translation theories and strategies that can be applied for football commercial activities.As for this interpreting project, such interpreting strategies as the combination of Hans Vermeer’s Functionalist Theory and the author’s professional knowledge in football are introduced into the interpreting practice. Interpreting preperation, plan-making, parallel text research, task prediction and the establishment of corpora are specially focused. By means of case study, the problems caused by different pronunciations, intonations and understandings between Liverpool club staff and football players in this project are solved. Also strategies are concluded to tackle unexpected situations on the basis of good preparations and interpreting skills.This interpreting practice is quite new in commercial activities related to football cultural exchanges. And the application of Vermeer’s Functional Interpreting Theory in football interpreting practice is the creativeness of the thesis. Moreover, the challenge of the research is the listening strategies on the basis of comprehension of the different pronunciations of the people from different countries by examination of the paralell texts and interpreting case studiesThe rapid economic development of China will certainly boost the cultural exchange in the sports field between home and abroad. In the future, as there will be more football commercial interpreting task, it is hoped that this interpreting practice can provide interpreters who will do the similar tasks with practical help on preparations, emergencies and identification of different pronunciations.In terms of interpreting theories, the German Functionalist Skopos theory is used throughout the entire process of interpreting from preparation to postinterpreting review, which will surely do some contributions in theory to future interpreting projects. |
