| Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Eugene A. Nida, an American linguist and translation theorist, this thesis reports how Nida’s theory is applied to the translation of John Fowles’ short story The Ebony Tower.As a type of literary translation, translation of a short story requires that translators should have a deep understanding of the content and artistic style of the original works. Good translation should exactly convey the theme, artistic image and style of the original work into another language, so that target readers can gain the similar feelings of artistic beauty as the source readers do. In other words, literary translation emphasizes that the response of target readers should be the same as that of source-text readers. As Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory points out, translating is more than a static linguistic phenomenon, and a qualified translator should be in a position to convey the message and style of the original work smoothly to meet the standard of target language and target readers. Thus, Functional Equivalence Theory is quite applicable translation The Ebony Tower.The Ebony Tower is a representative work of postmodernist British writer John Fowles. Using this short story as a sample, this report intends to analyze and summarize how proper strategies are adopted in the translation of The Ebony Tower.This report is comprised of four parts. The first part introduces the background of this translation practice, writer and The Ebony of Tower. The second part briefly has the introduction of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and its application in the translation of The Ebony Tower. The third part discusses how to translate the language of character, rhetorical devices and long sentences in the short story under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. The final part summarizes how translation strategies help to solve problems in the process of the translation of the short story. |
