Since the beginning of conference interpreting, experts have been searching for ways to find out "how to become a competent interpreter". Based on the four Sino-U.S. Conference Interpreting practices that I have done, I summarize the barriers that I came through and try to find ways to solve them. In dealing with the first kind of barriers, that is, linguistic barriers, meaning that interpreters cannot freely move from one language to another, I refer to the concept of "Communicative Language Ability Model" raised by Bachman. First I look through the roles that linguistic competence plays in the interpreting practice, then try to find corresponding solutions.But owing linguistic competence does not necessarily mean that interpreters can successfully undertake the interpreting job. In the situational practice, I find that situational barriers also have a huge impact on the real interpreting activity. This kind of barriers includes not only mental state, psychological state, but also allocation of attention. Based on Gile’s "Efforts Model", I carry out specific interpreting analysis. Only after solving the above linguistic barriers and situational barriers can interpreters successfully carry out their jobs.
