The practice report makes a main study on both combination and division by translating long Chinese firefighting sentences into English. Taking integrated solutions of fire extinguishing as an example, the author discusses the effectiveness of both combination and division in English translation of similar texts through the analysis of questions generated. First, the report analyses the structure division mistakes in terms of logistic relations, including causality, coordination and whole-part relation. Second, it discusses how to distinguish main information of nouns or verbs or adjectives or clauses from secondary information. Third, it explores the usage of conjunctive words in the simple sentences and subordinate sentences, especially how to add to connective words. Fourth, it researches how to nominalize verbs, adjectives and clauses. Finally, it probes into active and passive structures in voice and non-finite verbs.What’s more, the report summarizes characteristics of long firefighting sentences and proposes more appropriate skills and methods to use combination and division, in the hope of providing some enlightenment for the translation of related texts.
