Practice Report On The English Translation Of 2016 DFZQ's ESG Report

This report introduces translation examples of the 2016 Environmental,Social and Governance Report of DFZQ in the 2016 Annual Report of DFZQ,analyzes the original text and presents difficulties encountered and solutions.An annual report,as publicity material of the company,is intended to officially disclose operating information of the previous year to investors and stakeholders,so its translation belongs to non-literary and formal one.Thus it consists of many long sentences which impede its smooth translation.This report focuses on the translation methods of long sentences.This report starts from the analysis of differences between Chinese and English sentences,and tries to apply three translation methods——synchronizing,division and combination-according to the different types of long sentences,single long sentences and compound long sentences,and the logical hierarchical relationship within them.Those simple long sentences,as they consist of simple structures,can be translated with synchronizing method.While for those compound long sentences,if they state two or more topics,or clarify the relationship between the total points,the translation method of division can be applied;if not,they merely talk about the same theme but with logical relationships such as progressive,turning,parallel or causal ones thereof,the translation method of combination can be utilized.In addition,if two long Chinese sentences talk about the same topic and without complicated sentence structures,its translation can also adopt the method of combination;while if with complicated sentence structures which may block the understanding of the target readers,then the source sentence can be synchronized.During proofreading,this report introduces the differences of text content,culture format and rhetorical style between publicity materials of Chinese and English companies,for example,the publicity materials of Chinese company contain long and even surplus information in its text content,many political words and expressions and uses the third person to show their subjectivity;while those of English company are with simple and concise content,less political words and often adopt the first person to narrow down the gaps between the readers and the companies.This report modifies the translation by taking a full consideration of thinking patterns and reading habits of the target readers.In a word,long Chinese sentences can be found in many formal texts,so the difficulties of their English translation can be frequently encountered.It is hoped that the tentative translation methods discussed in this report may provide reference for later translations and study of long Chinese sentences in similar texts.
