This paper is a C-E translation report on a domestically publicized thesis “Mate Selection Preferences: Whom Do Contemporary Chinese Undergraduates Want to Date”. It involves the preparation before translation, the process and self-examination after translation, and discusses the validity of skopos theory in such kind of informative text. Examples are offered to attempt to prove the reasonability of skopos theory applied in this practical translation task.Skopos theory, put forward by German translator and theorist Hans Vermeer holds that translation depends on the purpose of translation, translation purpose determines the choice of translation strategies and translation methods. In order to publish the English version of “Mate Selection Preferences: Whom Do Contemporary Chinese Undergraduates Want to Date” in foreign journals, the author translated the original paper into English under the guidance of skopos theory. According to New mark’ text categorization, “Mate Selection Preferences: whom Do Contemporary Chinese Undergraduates want to Date" belongs to an informative text and together with purpose and requirements of the initiator of translation, skopos theory was chosen to guide the whole process of translation and the author tried to produce a comparatively faithful, natural and smooth translation. This thesis aims to summarize the application of skopos theory in the translation of such kind of informative text by introducing main contents of “Mate Selection Preferences: whom Do Contemporary Chinese Undergraduates want to Date" in details, analyzing its text type, describing the whole process of translation practice, listing the problems in the translation and the translation strategy or method used to solve them.
