The source text selected in this translation project, approximately 12,300 words, is an excerpt(the first six chapters) taken from How to Lie with Statistics. The total translation is a cooperative work and the translator was responsible for producing a first translation draft. How to Lie with Statistics is the representative work of Darrell Huff, a famous American statistician. Since 1954 when it was published, the book has been reissued and enjoyed a high reputation worldwide. Although it is very specialized in statistics, the author of the book analyzes the principles of statistics through abundant vivid cases by employing plain language and writing in a humorous but sharp style. Therefore, it is not difficult for readers to understand the basic principles in statistics and see through the meaning of data and graphics in the field so as to clearly figure out what is behind the statistics.Guided by Newmark‘s text typology, the translator thinks that the source text mainly has a characteristic of informative text and supplements a characteristic of expressive text. As for its text features, the source text obviously presents strong professional knowledge, simple words, colloquial language as well as a humorous but sharp writing style. On the basis of the translation project, the translator describes the preparations and implementation in this report. By analyzing the linguistic features, the translator classifies and summarizes several typical problems encountered during the translating process, and puts forward corresponding translation methods and skills through case analyses. In addition, the translator reflects what is learned through this translating project and the necessary qualities for a professional translator.
