With the profound changes undertaken in the international landscape,China is actively advancing the major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics and promoting world peace and development. The diplomatic speeches of Chinese leaders play a crucial role in portraying a global image of China as a responsible major country.Diplomatic interpretating, especially on-site simultaneous interpretating,is essential for China to properly convey its voice to the world. Therefore,it is of significance to propose useful coping strategies for interpreting high-level diplomatic speeches.Enumerations constitute condensed information in discourses and pose a challenge to interpreters. In simultaneous interpreting, interpreters often utilize various strategies flexibly to overcome the difficulty caused by multiple enumerations. To identify the effective strategies, this study takes the diplomatic speeches of President Xi Jinping as case materials and analyzes the C-E simultaneous interpreting strategies of enumerations in the speeches. As diplomatic interpreting has an explicit purpose to promote communication during highlevel interactions, the theoretical framework of Skopos Theory is adopted to prove the effectiveness of the strategies.According to the theory, translation and interpreting should abide by three rules: the Skopos rule, the Coherence rule and the Fidelity rule. With the guidance of Skopos Theory and its three rules, the thesis draws on the performance of professional interpreters and their interpretating strategies of enumerations, and proposes practical strategies for interpreting trainees. The strategies include omission, transposition, restructuring, explanation, etc.Through the case analysis, the author also explores the conformity of the interpretations to the three rules while demonstrating that the sequence of the three rules in diplomatic interpreting is arranged from the Skopos rule to the Coherence rule and then to the Fidelity rule. |
