A Report On Lecture Interpreting:A Case Study Of "Rule Of Law In Trump's Era"

The report on lecture interpreting in politics and law settings records the interpreter's ex ante task preparation.on-site interpretation and ex post self-examination.Task preparation includes improving comprehension of linguistic knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge,drilling before the lecture with partner,and making an on-site preparation.The transcript of on-site performance shows the incorrect translation falls into three categories according to Gile's effort model.Failures were triggered by insufficient processing capacities for listening,production and coordination.Under each category,there are representative examples with reasons for mistranslation,strategies adopted on-site and solution.The report concludes three points:interpreters could complete task preparation,such as translating handouts and anticipating the discourse,to reduce the on-site processing requirements for listening,production and coordination;when encountering on-site emergencies,interpreters could seek help from their partners or skip over secondary information to express major information and make up for the mistranslation;interpreters need to be life-long learners and do daily practice targeted on improving comprehension.
