A Report On Translation Of Wine Production: Vine To Bottle

Wine Production: Vine to Bottle, written by Keith Grainger and Hazel Tattersall, is an English book mainly about Viticulture and Vinification. The source text is an informative one which has a language style of objectiveness and normativeness with massive information and deep expertise. Its translation to Chinese requires to matching not only of language style as an informative text, but also of the general writing manner of Chinese, while demanding fidelity to the source text.This paper introduces the English-Chinese translation process of Wine Production: Vine to Bottle, the problem types in the translation process, the process of thinking over those problems and the solutions to them. It covers the translation methods that are obtained and summarized under the three rules of the Skopos theory, which are the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Through the analysis of the translation cases, this paper summarizes the translation methods and ways of thinking in allusion to informative text. On syntactical level, it also contains three kinds of translation methods. Transliteration is used to translate Names of hydrometers, wines and companies; Literal translation is taken to translate Names of Chemical compounds, techniques and equipments; Lexical equivalence is workable to translate the term that has different or no translated versions. On syntactical level, it also contains three kinds of translation methods which are Voice changes, Inversion and Conversion and used according to differences between English and Chinese. Those methods and solutions, to some extent, can server as reference for translating informative texts.
