From the seventies of the last century, the learners’ needs have been a key factor in foreign language learning. Need provides the most basic motivation for language learning. Fully understanding the learners’ Chinese language learning needs, can not only help them acquire Chinese better, but also can provide Chinese language teachers reference in teaching. The results of the students’ needs analysis, may provide the basis for materials adaptation and can better meet the needs of students, thus it can help improve teaching quality, promote the development of teaching Chinese to foreign students. This study attempts to understand and analyze the needs of the elementary Chinese learners in school of international education Chongqing University deeply and comprehensively, the findings may also provide a reference for other materials adaptation.Based on needs analysis, this study aims to investigate the needs of the foreign students in elementary comprehensive course through questionnaires. Through questionnaires, interviews and literature study, we analyze the reasonable composition of the students’ needs and put forward suggestions for adapting teaching materials, then take a unit, as example, to recompose it, to better promote teaching Chinese as a second language.Through questionnaires and interviews, we find that there are mainly 4 problems in Developing Chinese(Elementary ComprehensiveⅠ):Firstly, the number of new words is relatively large, the interpretation may not be entirely accurate, and new words ranking is not in accordance with the order from easy to difficult; Secondly, the grammar explanation is not simple, the example is not typical; Thirdly, the forms of practice are single and fail to highlight the communicative principle; Fourthly, Chinese characters and Pinyin are not reasonably combined, and it lacks the explanation of Chinese character stroke.To solve the above problems, our suggestions for adaption are: Firstly, It should highlight key words in the word list, the word order should be arranged reasonably;Secondly, the explanations of grammar should be clear, the examples should be typical;Thirdly, exercises should focus on developing the students’ language knowledge and enhancing their language ability; Fourthly, Character must be reasonably in conjunction with Pinyin, Chinese teacher should explain Chinese characters stroke in daily teaching.
