A Report On The Translation Of Method For Producing Composite Ceramic Material

Recently, with the development of technology, people attach great importance to intellectual property protection. The normalization of the patent application document also becomes a significant issue of concern in that it is the basis for protection of applicants’ rights and interests. Consequently, the translation of patent application documents begins to flourish, but problems such as translation criteria and translation strategies still require further study owing to its rather late start.The paper mainly discusses the English-Chinese translation of Method for Producing Composite Ceramic Material, which is a patent application document in composite material field with 10,000 words in total. By utilizing functionalist theories, this paper is intended to indentify how to collect related material, analyze the text and choose appropriate strategies when translating patent documents.The paper first briefly introduces the background and significance of the project.Then it describes the necessary preparations, the translation procedures and the proofread work. Due to the particularity of patent documents, this paper analyzes the typical cases through the lexical, syntactical and textual perspectives. The translation of the scientific and technological terms is the basis of this project; the translation of the passive voice and the attributive clause is the guarantee to realize the authenticity and fluency; the translation of the background art, the disclosure of the invention and the claims is the key and difficult point.By analyzing the whole translation process, this paper summaries two problems in the English-Chinese translation of patent documents--the translation of the specialized vocabularies and the expression of professional language, and concludes the professional qualities. The author hopes this paper can be helpful in the studies of the English-Chinese translation of patent documents.
