The Consecutive Interpreting is an important form of interpretation, in which the interpreter listens to the source language and takes notes at the same time, and then interprets what the speaker says according to the notes and his or her working memory. The simulated consecutive interpreting(SCI) creates a simulated working environment for the interpreter to improve and evaluate his or her interpreting ability, thus providing an effective teaching method for interpreting.A speech delivered by Orville Schell in the US-China Institute of University of South California(USC) is chosen as the material for the SCI task. Centering on his book Wealth and Power: China’s Long March to the Twenty-first Century, Orville makes a thorough analysis of the history, reform and development of China in recent 3 decades. The SCI task is video-recorded first and then both the speaker’s speech and the author’s interpretation are transcribed into text. Based on the on-site video, a detailed analysis of the author’s interpretation performance is made, such as interpreting quality, psychology diathesis, emergency response and so on. In this report, the author analyzes the problems that frequently occurs in the interpreting process through classification and quantification and categorizes them into four types, namely improper pauses, information loss, inappropriate expressions and misinterpretation. The former two problems are introduced in detail from three aspects. The author chooses typical examples to trace their causes first, then she puts forward related countermeasures under the guide of the Interpretive Theory and the Skopos Theory, finally she draws conclusions on the aspects that she needs to improve after analyzing her deficiency and performance in the SCI task.This report shows the importance and necessity of the Interpretive Theory in interpreting tasks. In addition, the author benefits a lot from both the SCI task and the analysis of related problems that occurred. Hopefully, this study can also be of some help to other students of interpreting.
