A Translation Report (E-C) On The Biggest Estate On Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia (Chapter Two)

This is a translation report, the original text of which comes from Bill Gammage’s book---- Chapter two of The Biggest Estate on Earth:How Aborigines Made Australia. This book naturally and precisely has uncovered an extraordinarily complex system of land management using fire, the life cycles of native plants, and the natural flow of water to manage the land throughout the year. The 59 pictures depicting aspects of 1788 management in Chapter two are studied and compared to imply what Aborigines did while managing the country. The original book is written in English, and author tries to firstly translate it into Chinese. Chapter two are about 20,000 words.This report includes four chapters, including the description of translation project, study background, the translation difficulties and methods, and the conclusion. Chapter three is the important part, which introduces the translation difficulties and translation methods with examples in translation of words, sentences, and discourse. Particularly, transliteration, paraphrase and mixed translation are used for proper noun translation, and depending on context for common noun translation. What’s more, amplification, turning words into clauses, breaking long sentences and recombination are used for sentence translation. And in discourse, cohesion in English and Chinese is studied.This report gives examples of translation of names of places, animals and plants, and mountains in Australia besides introducing some translation methods in translating the book about Aboriginal land management. In addition, the final version will provide references for other translators and offer some materials for readers who are interested in Aboriginal land management ways by changing patterns.
