This is a report on the translation of The Biggest Estate on Earth:How Aborigines Made Australia (Chapter 10-11) by famous Australian historian Bill Gammage. The last two chapters of the popular historical monograph are mainly about how European invasion changed the life of Australian Aborigines, and attack the prejudice of people to Aborigines with many historical facts. Scholars and experts at home and abroad pay more and more attention to Australian history. At the same time, Bill has finished this historical monograph, based on hundreds of observers’ studies. Therefore, translating this book can make the author have an objective understanding of Australian history. These two chapters, more than 17 thousand words are translated by author for the first time.In the process of translation, the author mainly analyses and states translation difficulties with examples and translation methods in order to be faithful to the original as much as possible. Difficult points in this translation practice mainly exist at lexical and syntactic levels. Lexical difficulties are mainly translation of words with Australian characteristics, place and plant names and choices of words’ meaning which have been solved by relevant translation methods such as literal translation with notes, transliteration and free translation, and choosing words’ meaning in light of the contexts; Syntactic difficulties are mainly comprehension and expression of short and long sentences which have been dealt with amplification, following syntactic orders of the original and comprehensive approach.Through analyzing the difficulties and solutions in the process of translating the source text, the author realizes that the use of appropriate translation methods is very important to guide translation practice. The translator should do a lot of practice and make summaries which are effective ways to improve translation ability.
