A Translation Report On The Biggest Estate On Earth:How Aborigines Made Australia (Chapter 5-6)

At present, there are no systematic writings about Australia aborigines, and most introductions and researches can be found in newspapers, magazines and network. The aborigines have lived in Australia as far back as 50,000 years, where they always follow the traditional philosophy in their life. The country is everything to their material and spiritual life and they also worship and show awe to it. However, the living conditions of the aborigines were quickly exacerbated in 1788 when the Europeans arrived.This is a translation report on the fifth and sixth chapters of The Biggest Estate on Earth:How Aborigines Made Australia written by Bill Gammage, an Australian historian. The fifth chapter mainly illustrates the intimate, even sacred relations between the aborigines and their country. The author proposes from a new perspective in the sixth chapter that the now park-like landscape of Australia was not natural, but "made" through intricately scientific use of varying fire regimes.Except introducing the background and significance of the translation, this report mainly aims at listing translation difficulties, including translation of words and sentences, and applies such translation methods as explanation, amplification, extension and following the original syntactic order etc. with a number of examples figuring out the difficulties in the practice. It is hoped that this report offers some referential value for the translation of historical documents and the study of Australia aborigines.
