A Translation Report On The Biggest Estate On Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia (Chapter 1 And Appendix)

This is a translation report, the material of which comes from Bill Gammage’s book-the chapter one and Appendix of The Biggest Estate on Earth:How Aborigines Made Australia. The book introduces how the Aboriginal people in Australia develop this Magical land, reveals a kind of extraordinarily complex land management system, namely to protect plentiful wild animals and plants with fire, the life cycles of the native plants and the natural flow of water. At the same time, the book has retold the history of Australia, established the size of land management of the Aboriginal people. It has also illustrated the intelligent, skills and knowledge which passed from generation to generation, to meet the need of land management, to tell people about a magnificent epic of national development. The first chapter is the important part, which introduces the main vegetation types and their distribution, and at the same time, the significance of the land management. And the Appendix is full of sweeping generalizations and some experience of the author before his writing.This translation project consists of four parts:The brief description of the translation task, the translation process, the difficulties and methods in the process of translation and a meticulous retrospect and summary respectively. Chapter three is the most important part for its difficulties and methods. The translator illustrates the problems during the process from the aspect of words and syntax, particularly, transliteration, paraphrase and image-translation are took up for noun translation. The unpacking is adopted for the relationship between words and words. The abstract translation is used for some specific words. The positive and negative translation is used for dealing with the problem of "translation disorder".In addition, four-character structure for some given adjectives and Division are used for solving the problem of long complex sentences.This book has made a great contribution to carrying forward and inheriting the Australian culture and at the same time, to making more people get to know the Australian Aborigines better. However, the greater significance of the book is very precious and important for the cultural diversity, especially in the age of globalization. What’s more, through the translation of this book, we can have a better understanding of the struggle and cooperation between human and nature in the early stage, and comprehend the magic of nature and great of Creator, which is also the significance of the translation.
