As the globalization gains the speed, the international communications are no longer taking place within countries. The friendly intercourses between cities of different countries are getting more and more frequent, which involve politic, economy, culture and other fields. In such kind of communication under informal situation, the liaison interpreting is generally playing the role of "Jack of all trades", in which interpreters need not only control the overall atmosphere of the communication, but even play the key role of guiding the trend of the content. The author thinks the effective reformulation may provide a new viewpoint for the interpretation and its relative study. However, most previous studies of reformulation are more concentrated on translation and fewer scholars have deeply researched and discussed it combining with liaison interpreting. This thesis is based on the author’s own interpreting practice. As a liaison interpreter in the reception of Sri Lanka guests, the author realized some of typical problems in terms of linguistic aspect and non-linguistic aspect, which include impolite discourse, redundancy, long sentences, and unfamiliar terms. Thus, the thesis analyzes the features of liaison interpreting and lists linguistic problems and non-linguistic problems, which distinguish it from other types of interpreting. Combining reformulation theory, the thesis discusses the applications and strategies of effective reformulation in liaison interpreting including paraphrase strategy, addition strategy, omission strategy and super-ordinate strategy. Based on the study above, the thesis proves the significance of applying reformulation in liaison interpreting. At the end of the thesis, the author sums up the major findings and limitations of the study and brings forward his suggestions for future research.
