| This translation project report is based on translating Chapter 7 and the first part of Chapter 8 of Jeremy Black’s From Louis XIV to Napoleon:the Fate of Great Power. The chapters cover the Napoleon’s foreign policies during his reign and explores the losses and gains of wars at each stage. The translation of this book will help Chinese readers better understand French history. However, this non-fictional book contains a great number of proper nouns and long sentences which constitute the biggest difficulty in translation. The "functional equivalence" proposed by Nida emphasizes conveying the meaning of original text in natural and easy ways. So the author chooses the functional equivalence theory to guide the translation project. The author of this report adopts literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration to translate proper nouns and exercise such methods as rearranging word order and splitting sentence to translate long sentences to achieve "functional equivalence". The final part of this report is on the lessons gained in this translation practice, which may guide the author through the future translation. |
