A Translation Project Report Of From Louis ⅩⅣ To Napoleon:The Fate Of A Great Power (Excerpt)

This report is based on the project of translating Chapter Six of From Louis XIV to Napoleon:The Fate of a Great Power, a scholarly account written by Jeremy Black. The book analyzes and summarizes the rise and fall of French power from the perspective of French history, international relations and foreign policy. In translating the text, the writer of this report adopts translation strategies such as literal translation and free translation as well as such methods as conversion, and addition under the guidance of text typology theory put forward by the British translation, theorist Peter Newmark, Chapter 3 of this report illustrates this in terms of vocabulary translation and sentence translation. Several implications could be concluded from the translation practice. Firstly, an appropriate translation theory plays a directive role. Secondly, considering text type and making full preparations facilitate the translation process. Finally, a correct understanding of linguistic features of source text and translated text ensures the translation quality. All these help the translator achieve the overall balance among the purpose and function of translation, the reproduction of original meaning and the customer’s benefit and requirement.
