The translation report is wr itten on the basis of translating the second chapter selected from The Pursuit of Happiness--Government and Politics in America by John A.Moore,Jr and Myron Roberts, whic h demonstrates why Am ericans pursue happiness from historical perspective.As the source text is an introduction a bout American culture and m any culture factors are involved, foreignzing translation strategy is used in the translating process, at the same time translator’s notes are adopted where obscure sentences appear.The translation report includes four parts— task description, translation process, case analysis and conclusion. The first part briefly introduces the source and m ain contents of the translation m aterial. The second part states preparation work, the difficulties in the firs t translated v ersion, modifications made, final ch eck, and the finalized version. The third part gives some typical examples where some appropriate translation techniques are em ployed to render good language, including culture, vocabulary and sentence pattern. And the last part is a conclusion drawn according to the translation practices.Through the translation task, the author has gained a m ore profound knowledge about American culture, and learned m ore about how to translate culture-loaded words. At the sam e time, the author has realized that a qualif ied translator needs adequate knowledge both in English and Chinese.
