With the boom of economy, scientific and technological strength has become one vital factor to demonstrate one country’s cultural soft power. Reading foreign magazine has become one of the main channels to gain latest science and technology information. As one of the most influential magazines in the world, The Economist has become the preferred materials. The Economist essays always contain a large amount of information, resulted in a lot of terms. How to translate these terms accurately is turned into an very important task in translating. The main contents of this report are divided into five chapters: Chapter One is the description of the translation project, including background, process, significance and the organization of this thesis. Chapter Two is about the Onomastic Terminology and terms, including brief introduction of Onomastic Terminology, features of technical terms and the development of technical term glossaries for The Economist. Chapter Three is about the strategies in translating general technical terms with the guidance of Onomastic Terminology. Chapter Four is about the phenomena and strategies in translating difficult technical terms. Chapter Five concludes with lessons, implications and unsolved problems in the translation. This report focuses on the translation of technical terms. On the basis of Onomastic Terminology theories, analysis of the form of existed terms will be conducive to finding the most productive patterns and modes to create new terms. This will provide guidance for the translation of general technical terms. Rapid development of disciplines, multi-disciplinary crossing and term permeation through the people’s daily life make term translation very challenging. Thus, difficult terms are divided into two categories: context-dependent terms and terms in emerging fields. Strategies for the translation of difficult technical terms are also presented in this report. This report believes that Onomastic Terminology has an important guidance value for the translation of terms. It is hoped that term processing in this report can offer some reference for the translation of scientific essays.
