Western philosophy, essence of western culture,is the product of thinking modes and cultures totally different from Chinese civilization.Since its introduction to the East, great progress has been made by Chinese scholars in the study of Western philosophy, which has greatly benefited from translation. As the medium, translation provides Chinese scholars with an opportunity to better understand western thinking, based on which,a way towards the world is paved for splendid Chinese civilization, thus enhancing the exchange and mutual understanding between China and the West.According to language functions,Newmark puts forward the text typology theory and divides the text into three types: expressive text, informative text and vocative text.Newmark believes that communicative translation and semantic translation should be adopted respectively based on the functions of different types of texts.According to Newmark’s text typology theory, the philosophical text chosen for this translation practice has both informative and expressive functions. Therefore, based on the analysis of the text type and linguistic functions of the source text, this study applies semantic and communicative translation to the translation of philosophical texts.Cases are studied concerning the translation of philosophical terms,polysemy,culture-loaded words, and quotations from philosophical monographs,as well as the handling of the passive voice, part of speech, long and complex sentences and so on.Communicative translation and semantic translation are employed appropriately to solve the problems encountered in the translation practice. Finally, this translation report summarizes the major findings of the translation practice,in the hope of providing reference for the translation of similar texts.
