Analysis Of Errors In TV Simultaneous Interpreting Based On Effort Model

With the development of globalization, simultaneous interpreting, which is widely recognized as a high-efficient and time-saving interpreting method, has been more and more applied to international communication. Simultaneous interpreting could be divided into two categories in accordance with working environment:conference simultaneous interpreting and media simultaneous interpreting. TV simultaneous interpreting belongs to the latter one. TV simultaneous interpreting means simultaneous interpreters who work in the broadcasting room interpret the news or TV programs for the audience through satellite signals. TV simultaneous interpreters face more uncertain factors such as television signals, unpredictable accidents in news spots than conference interpreters do. Besides, the output of simultaneous interpreters is the only source of information for the audience. All of these difficulties will make interpreters under great pressure. Any mistake during the TV program will affect the performance of interpreters.Professor Daniel Gile proposed the theory of Effort Model which is applied to simultaneous interpreting for the first time in 1995. If an interpreter wants to process the interpreting task successfully, he or she must make sure that not only the total available capacity exceeds the total processing capacity requirements, but also each available capacity is enough to finish the task each processing capacity requires of. The original text adopted in this thesis is State of the Union that American President Obama addressed in 2015. The interpreted version of this text is transcribed from the Chinese version of Voice of America. The author analyzes the audio version of simultaneous interpreting and the original video of the speech. Then the author summarizes three types of errors that two interpreters made during the interpreting process:omission, misinterpreting and slip of tongue. Combing with Effort Model, the author studies the causes of these errors and puts forward several basic interpreting strategies:on the basis of syntactic linearity, the interpreter should adopt anticipation, simplification as well as other linguistic strategies to deal with the source text. The author wishes that more simultaneous interpreters who work in TV programs will avoid potential risks and improve the quality of the interpreting by reading the analysis of common errors and coping strategies in TV simultaneous interpreting in this thesis.
