A Report On English-chinese Translation Of Chapter Six Language To Persuade In Living Language: Reading, Thinking And Writing

This is a report on English-Chinese translation of chapter six Language to Persuade in Living Language:Reading,Thinking and Writing.According to the whole context and the style of writing,the title of the book is translated as《活生生的语言:阅读、思考与写作》in chinese.There are nine chapters in total. Generally speaking, the source text, which exposes the living usage of language in our practical life, belongs to applied linguistics and involves some unique opinions expressed by the author. Especially in the sixth chapter Language to Persuade, which introduces various kinds of propaganda and persuasive techniques, the author relates them into our practical life. There are five parts in this chapter, they are respectively Two Persuasive Newspaper Columns, Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled, The Speeding Ticket and Word Law as well as From the World of Doublespeak.As for the content, it involves large amounts of proper nouns such as names of person or place and various idioms; in terms of the syntactical structure, many complex sentences appeared in the text. Additionally, there are some politically vivid examples in this chapter, which bring difficulties in translation because of the lingustic and cultural differences between Chinese and English. In line with the writing style, the source text is translated based on the theory of Nida’s dynamic equivalence, which is used to solve difficult points encountered in the translation process. The translator try her best to be intimately close to the expressions of target language on the basis of remaining the writing style of source text.
