U.S. is one of the world’s largest economies. White house, the political center of U.S., holds daily press briefings to report its daily work and answer questions from journalists. So press briefing held by the White House is one of the major ways for the public and the world to get to know political and economic trends of U.S.Interpretive theory of translation, also known as sense-based theory, was born in1960 s in France. It suggests that translation should be guided by the sense of source language. The interpreting process can be divided into 3 steps, namely understanding, deverbalization, and re-expression. As the theory comes from direct observations of professional interpreters’ practices, it is proved to be instructive to the interpreting of Press Briefings. This practice report is based on the Press Briefing of the White House on November9 th, 2015 held by the Press Secretary of the White House, Mr. Josh Earnest. Instructed by the interpretive theory of translation, this interpreting practice follows its 3-step procedure of translation, namely comprehension, de-verbalization and re-expression. After thorough research and analysis of the practice recording, I am able to find out some interpreting skills guided by interpretive theory of translation, such as addition. At last, the report consists of six parts, Foreword, Introduction to the Press Briefing, Preparation, Caseanalysis, Interpreting Skills, and Summary.
