As an important carrier for Chinese language teaching activities, Chinese textbooksare not only with too many expectations, but also suffer from most criticism. Withdeepening reforms in China’s basic education, the reform on Chinese textbooks hasgradually achieved some revolutionary results. Guided by ideas emphasized in NewCurriculum, senior high school Chinese textbooks are with several characteristics: forexample, several essays under one title and all these essays are available for reading andappreciation. Foreign literature is an enormous treasure-house of ideas, consisting of richspiritual and cultural achievements of various countries for thousands of years. It can besaid that the unique exotic things involved in foreign literature have not only broadenedpeople’s horizons, but also enriched humans’ emotions. Foreign literature is importantcomponent of senior high-school Chinese textbooks, and it is with great realisticsignificance to make a study on it, so as to provide references for the selection andarrangement of Chinese textbooks.This thesis mainly includes the following three parts. The introduction mainlyintroduces the paper selected topic background, significance and research methods. Thefirst chapter introduces the foreign literature involved in Chinese textbooks and othertextbooks. In this chapter, from microcosmic, medium and macroscopic aspects, theauthor introduces the connotation of Chinese textbooks, specifying the study object ofthe paper, discussing four features of selection and arrangement for Chinese textbooks,including readable and appreciation, purpose and guidance quality, instrumental andexemplary, prescriptive and flexible. Then the author makes a positioning thinking forforeign literature contained in Chinese textbooks, specifying the function of foreignliterature in spreading multi culture, awakening morality and intelligence as well as inaesthetic education. The second chapter analyzes the selection and arrangement offoreign literature of PEP senior high school Chinese textbooks, especially from twoaspects, namely, selection and arrangement of essays. By means of chart display andcomparative analysis, the author makes a systemic statistics for foreign literature contained in PEP senior high school Chinese textbooks. Comparing with that in JEPHsenior high school Chinese textbooks, the author discusses the features of selection andarrangement of PEP senior high school Chinese textbooks, as well as the problemsexisting in selection and arrangement of foreign literature. Based on the analysis, it canbe seen that the selection and arrangement of foreign literature contained in PEP seniorhigh school Chinese textbooks is with scientific features as well as some deficiencies: onthe one hand, the quantity of foreign literature is less, accounting for a smaller proportionin the whole textbooks; on the other hand, the selected essays are confined to specificareas and ages, mainly from Western Europe and North America, and mainly telling thestories happened in18th to20th century; besides, the contents are too concentrated,while it is necessary to consider the actual needs of students; moreover, the selection andarrangement of foreign literature is with several features, such as "integrated literarystyles" and "integrated modules", while the selection and arrangement of essays arelimited by genres, which needs further improvement. The third chapter is about thethinking of PEP senior high school Chinese textbooks, consisting of two parts. The firstpart analyzes the factors influencing the selection and arrangement of foreign literature,that is, the guide function of new curriculum standard, the impetus of multiculturalbackground as well as the constraints of students’ cognitive level and development law.The second part is about the suggestions for the selection and arrangement of foreignliterature. The selection of foreign literature should be suitable and diversified,emphasizing the integration of instrumentality and humanity, while the translated worksshould be reasonable and readable; the arrangement of essays has to emphasize thesystem of stylistic rules and layout, the exercise should be scientific and innovative, so asto make the selection and arrangement of foreign literature become more perfect andsuitable for students’ further development. The Conclusion analyzes the significance ofstudying the foreign literature, try to make the writing of the Chinese textbooks moreperfect in the future.
