Textbooks are teaching materials arranged with a certain goal and selected from vast materials.Published in the late Qing Dynasty, the new pattern of female textbooks were learning materialsspecialized for female students. The cultural context of the textbooks refers to the microsocio-cultural background that textbook has built, such as history and geography, traditionalcultural customs, social norms, the life style,value orientation, moral rules, social reform, thedevelopment of science and economy, families ties,literary arts and political civilization and so on.The cultural context of textbooks is related to social and cultural transformation and progressclosely, at the same time, it could influence readers’ formation of values.“the Chinese textbooksfor the Chinese female in higher primary school” was a serial Chinese textbooks for higher primarygirls, which is published by Chung Hwa Book Company in1914and compiled by threeexperienced editors: Shen Yi, Fan Yuanlian and Yang Zhe, besides, the service time of this set oftextbooks is longer than other textbooks at that era, from the first edition in1914to the eleventhedition in1920, this set textbook is relative completive and representative. Thus this research isbased on the book “the Chinese textbooks for the Chinese female in higher primary school”.This paper classified the cultural context established in the books “the Chinese textbooks forthe Chinese female in higher primary school” into modern cultural context and traditional culturalcontext. Based on the analysis of the culture context established in the books, this paper willevaluate the cultural context female textbooks built during the early of the Republic of China andanalyze the influence on the construction of the identity for female.Modern cultural context was emphasized in this set of textbooks. At the same time, doublefemale identity both as “female national” and “loving mother and understanding wife” was molded.Regard “national women” as priority identity but not neglect women’s role as loving mother andunderstanding wife, which stressed women’s dependence, interests of multi-purpose participationand state concept.
