NHEEE (National Higher Education Entrance Examination or known as Gaokao) test papers vary from province to province, but poetry is always covered in the Chinese subject testing paper. SAT is American version higher education enrollment test. Poetry test is covered in the SAT-Ⅱ Literature Test. This thesis compare the following material:poetry reading tests from5straight years’Gaokao Chinese subject test from2009to2013(including the national and the regional version), and the poetry reading tests from SAT-Ⅱ literature test. By comparing the poetry reading from the two different test systems, it is aimed to be helpful to the reform of the Gaokao poetry reading test in question design and teaching.This thesis is divided into five parts:The first part (introduction):Briefly introduce the importance of poetry in literature history, the reason and the aim of this thesis; Summarize the research review and the existing problems.The second part (chapter one):Discuss the comparability between the poetry reading tests from the two testing systems to establish the platform for the further research.The third part Chapter two):Research and summarize the feature of the two testing systems respectively in perspectives of the question design aim, poetry selection range, the relationship with the textbook and the question types.The fourth part (chapter three):With the research of the previous chapter, there makes three revelations about the reform of the poetry reading test of Gaokao:1. To expand the range of the poetry selection to include the works created in Chinese language without the nationality limitation;2. To expand the range of the poetry selection to include the contemporary works;3. To refine the test aim and to separate the examination of comprehension ability and analyzing ability.The fifth part (chapter four):On the basis of the previous chapters, the author makes some expectation and suggestion:First, to make the question design aim more clear and to separate the examination of comprehension ability and analyzing ability. To make sure the test effective and to avoid the formalized answer, textbooks should be taken into consideration to make a reading list for the candidates. Secondly, the contemporary works should be introduced to the test. And thus to guide the teaching of the contemporary works in a better way. Thirdly, the design of the choice question should be refined. Teachers should cultivate both students’test-taking skill and literature interpretation skill during the teaching by the guidance of The Chinese Course Criterion of Full-time Coinpulsory Education and The Explanation of GaokaoThe originality of this thesis is as followed:First, the starting point of the comparison is proper and convincing. Specifically, the starting point is the poetry test from the two testing systems.Secondly, with the help of the SAT-Ⅱ Literature test, it makes the suggestion that the traditional Chinese poetry test should separate the examination of comprehension ability and analyzing ability.Thirdly, it points out that contemporary works should be covered in the test to guide the teaching of contemporary works better.
