In the process of second language learning, motivational factors play an important role. Especially, in Chinese teaching for junior middle school students, how to cultivate and strengthen their motivations for Chinese learning has become a problem to be discussed and settled urgently. Based on the research achievements and related theories for teaching Chinese as a foreign language by predecessors as well as the practical experience for one year by the author, the author has analyzed and studied further the Chinese learning motivations of junior middle schools students in South Korea, mainly in the form of questionnaire survey supplemented by individual interview and classroom observation. When understanding the motivation types and intensity, the author has studied differences between students’ learning motivations under the influence of gender, grade, Chinese-learning duration and other factors. The author has proposed the principles, targets and specific strategies to cultivate and strengthen Chinese-learning motivations of junior middle school students. Strategies are detailed in respect of teacher, student, teaching material, classroom teaching and other aspects. This paper aims to enrich the research on teaching Chinese as a foreign language for junior middle school students and provide a certain reference to frontline Chinese teachers.This paper mainly consists of six parts. Part 1 has introduced the background, reasons and significance for this subject. In Part 2, concept definition and theoretical analysis have been carried out from different perspectives including motivation, learning motivation, motivation for learning a second language, characteristics of Chinese learned as a foreign language, motivation research, and so on. Part 3 has introduced the basic conditions of Chinese learners in South Korea and especially junior middle school students. Part 4 is mainly about the questionnaire design, survey implementation and survey result analysis. In Part 5, principles, targets and strategies to cultivate and strengthen the Chinese learning motivations of junior middle school students have been proposed based on the survey results. In Part 6, analysis and research have been carried out based on the specific teaching plans and specific cases. The last is the main idea and conclusion of this paper.
