In the existing literature about ceramic industry, there is less discussion about how the contemporary youth seeking identity in this traditional industry. The author focus on the peer groups born in Yixing who work in this traditional industry. This essay discuss the youth group age from 16 to 35 years old. This article attempts talk from three aspects:the self-cognition, the generational differences and peer group interaction to elaborate how to build the identity of contemporary ceramic art youth, the self identity is founded by comparing with other industries youth; Generational differences are focus on how they treat their father generation and how their father treat them.; Peer groups are not only focus on how young in peer group get self identity, but also pay attention to how the ceremony, rules and creations build the youth identity.The main theory in this paper is from Tajfel. His opinion is about three aspects: categorization, comparison and positive distinctiveness. Turner’s theory strengthening these aspects. In this essay, the relationship about the youth doing ceramic and other group is categorization; the relationship between the youth and their father is comparison; the activities in the youth own group is positive distinctiveness. This group is both folk art maker and artist, they are also can be treated as green hands, at the same time, they are nearly masters. Last but not least, they inheritance this old folk art and do some creation at the same time.This research mainly use interviews and participatory observation. I analyze their psychological change and cognitive differences, try to analyze the social role characteristics unique about this group. Finally, I give some suggestions to the further study, I hope on the basis of the discipline overlapping, there will be more researchers focus attention no this field.
