Private colleges and universities play crucial roles in higher education in China, undertaking an important historical mission in making higher education accessible to all as well as meeting the various demands towards higher education. For teachers in private colleges and universities, in addition to completing the primary task of teaching, they also have to conduct scientific researches not only for their own development but also for the academic progression of the colleges and universities they serve. Hence, research work is considered as the second important task for teachers in private colleges and universities, with teaching lying undoubtedly in the first place. The exploration regarding the influencing factors of research motivation and the stimulation thereof show a n extreme significant influence on the scientific research behaviour of the teachers in private colleges and universities. It’s indicated that studying their research motivation will allow us to identify key motivating factors which help to enthuse the teachers engaging in scientific research, enhance the quality of research achievements, and cultivate innovative talents. The theory of the psychological contract derived from western Organisational Behaviour Theory, designed to investigate the relationship between employees and organisations. From the perspective of staff- organisation interaction, it explains the psychological needs of employees as well as the exchange relationship between employees and organisations, based on which it interprets a series of employee behavio urs in the workplaces. Unlike public schools, private colleges and universities have their unique organisational nature reflected in but not limited to their operational and management systems. Taking into account the afore mentioned organisational nature of private colleges and universities, this study will use the psychological contract as a base point to reveal the research motivation of the teachers from private colleges and universities and the strategy of stimulating this motivation.This study was designed to, on the basis of existing references, use of literature review, questionnaire and interview methods, to investigate the research motivation level of the teachers from private colleges and universities in Shanghai. It explored the relationship between motivation and demographic variables, such as gender, age, etc., and inquired as to the possible influencing factors of the motivation from a psychological contract perspective; in order to conduct a comprehensive study of the research motivation of the teachers from private colleges and universities. Based on this, it proposed constructive motivation strategies for scientific research, and also to inspire teacher professionalisation and teacher manage ment in private colleges and universities.
