Extracurricular reading is all kinds of reading activities besides the reading practice in class. Its content range and mode are wider. So extracurricular reading can expand students’ vision and remedy the limitations of class reading. It is an important way to widen the students’ knowledge range.In this paper, for the current extracurricular reading situation of junior middle school students in our country, deep study is carried out. For the study methods,transversal and longitudinal comparison method is used to investigate the history of extracurricular reading in our country and abroad; questionnaire survey and interview are implied to examine the current situation of extracurricular reading in some junior middle school of Wuhou district of Chengdu. The purpose is to find the shortcomings of students’ reading methods and teachers’ guidence strategies and propose practicable improved strategies. There are important theoretical and practical significance for this study.This paper is divided into five parts to discuss the current extracurricular reading situation of junior middle school students and research on strategy improvement.Part 1, Introduction. This part address the importance of excurricular reading of junior middle school students, the study purpose, background and study methods of this project.Part 2, The history and development of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students. Firstly, the history and development of extracurricular reading in our country is studied. The extacurricular reading requirements in teaching program before and after liberation are reorganized. From the requirements we can see the historical evolution of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students. Secondly thecurrent extracurricular reading situation of junior middle school abroad is investigated,from which we can see the degree of attention of foreign governments and education departments to extracurricular reading of junior middle school students.Part 3, Investigation and study of current situation of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students. Firstly the current situation of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students is surveyed in detail by a questionnaire. The survey content covers reading interest, reading habits, reading methods, reading conditions, and puzzle in reading. The objects of survey are junior middle school students in some schools of Wuhou district of Chengdu. Secondly, on the subject of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students, some middle school Chinese literature teachers are interviewed. The current extracurricular reading situation is learned from the aspect of teachers. Finally some problems in extracurricular reading of junior middle school students are summarized.Part 4, Improvements and implementation of extracurricular reading methods,strategies of junior middle school students. In this part, the construction of reading atmosphere, the development of reading methods and habits and the guidence strategies are discussed systematically. Some improved extracurricular reading methods and strategies, such as social resource utilization, leading of the mass media, systematical programming and guidence of extracurricular reading are proposed. Through the implementation of these methods and strategies, it is expected that the situation of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students can be improved.Part 5, Conclusion. The importance of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students under current enviorenment is addressed again. Furthermore, some requirements for extracurricular reading of junior middle school students are proposed.Active reading and normal state reading are emphasized. It is expected that through the joint effort of parents, teachers and students, the level of extracurricular reading of junior middle school students can be enhanced greatly.
