A Study Of Elementary School Higher Grades Students’ Comprehension Level On Statistical Charts

In the informatization and digitization modern society, a lot of information in the form of data is being transfered and communicated. If we want to acquire the information that is inside of the data, we should sort and analyze these data. However, diverse statistical charts are used to analyze data. In today’s primary and secondary school mathematics education, the knowledge of statistical charts is becoming more and more of the importance, which becomes an important part of mathematics education. As a result, it is necessary to study elementary school higher grades students’ comprehension level on statistical charts.In this paper, the main research questions are:(1) how comprehension level on statistical charts the elementary school higher grades students have?(2) how making level on statistical figure elementary school higher grades students have?The results of research show that the understanding of the statistical table, there are 77.6% of students reached the level which can directly read data information, there are 75.0% of students reached the level that contrast and analyze between the data information, there are 71.1% of students reached the level that comprehensively analyze the data then to make some reasonable induction and inference; Understanding of the bar charts, it can be seen that there are 90.4% of students reached the level that contrast and analyze between the date information, there are 72.1% of students reached the level that comprehensively analyze the data then to make some reasonable induction and inference; Understanding of the line charts, it can be seen that there are 75.9% of students reached the level of directly read data information, and only 39.1% of students reached the contrast and analyze between the data information level, only 31.8% of students reached the comprehensively analyze the data then to make some reasonable induction and inference; As to make a bar chart, there are 46.0% of students choosing a bar chart to show the given data, and make it correct; For making line charts, there are 57.0% of students choosing the reasonable line charts to indicate the given data, and make it correct. Studies show that the elementary school higher grades students is better to understand statistical table and bar charts than line charts. And the level of making bar charts and line charts are not satisfactory.Based on the research findings, this paper finally puts forward some suggestions to teachers and students. Here are some advice to teachers: firstly, in the statistics section, teachers should strengthen the student’s understanding of the meaning of data in statistical charts; Secondly, in addition to strengthen students’ understanding of the meaning of statistical charts data, teachers also should regulate the expression of students; Thirdly, teachers in teaching should pay attention to the comprehensive analysis of the data and make some reasonable induction and inference(level 3); Fourthly, teachers in the understanding of the statistical figure teaching in the future should be aimed at students are more prone to the wrong place, to improve students’ ability of making statistical figure, to improve the efficiency of the statistical figure knowledge teaching. Here are some advices to students: firstly, although part of statistical knowledge is not the focus of the elementary school and junior high school, but it is closely related to our life, study statistical knowledge well is necessary. Secondly, students must be good at making statistical knowledge come from life, and be applied to life. Thirdly, we should enrich ourselves to the statistical figure made of relevant matters, which cannot be confined to books.
