Literature has always played an important role in traditional foreign language teaching.However, with the change of education and social conditions, the position of literature has historically been challenged. In recent years, literature has gradually returned to secondary foreign language class. English Curriculum Criteria for Secondary Education(2003)stipulates requirements of literature appreciation. Presently speaking, the overall situation of English literature teaching in senior high schools is not good. English teachers are still confused about what to teach, how to teach and how to evaluate learning results in English literature teaching class. In view of this situation, the author deeply feels the necessity and urgency of research on these issues.Based on the questions mentioned above, the author designs two questionnaires and makes interviews to conduct surveys among teachers and students to investigate the situation of English literature teaching in senior high schools. The respondents of this survey are from5 secondary schools of Zhangzhou, including key middle schools and non-key middle schools. The results of survey show that there exist some barriers in the way of English literature teaching in senior high school: literary reading of senior high school students is confined to literature material in the textbooks, there is little extension and supplement outside the classroom; linguistic knowledge and linguistic competence have always been overemphasized in foreign language class; English teachers lack of confidence in literature teaching; it still lacks of the corresponding evaluation mechanism for the teaching effect.Based on the analysis of current situation of English literature teaching, some main problems are summarized and some corresponding countermeasures are introduced according to the main problems of English literature teaching in senior high schools: English teachers should comprehensively consider various factors to choose appropriate literary reading material for senior high school students and reform their teaching models, improve their teaching strategies. Meanwhile we should put emphasis on teachers training and explore appropriate ways of evaluation. These suggestions may provide some guidance for Englishliterature teaching in senior high schools.
