The new "Curriculum Standards" points out:"Reading is a personal activity for students" Personalized reading can effectively increase the students’ individual reading experiences and stimulate their interests in reading, which are of positive significances for improving their reading skills and developing their cognitive levels. Nonetheless, there is currently an unnegligible problem regarding personalized reading in teaching high school Chinese, which are the low efficiency and lack of interest in reading for high school students in general. In addition, most Chinese teachers follow the routines in teaching students how to read due to the lack of better instructions, which greatly reduces the effectiveness of developing personalized reading in high school Chinese.Based on the above-mentioned problem this article investigates the effectiveness of instructing personalized reading in high school Chinese. The main contents of this article consist of five chapters. Chapter1being the introduction, mainly discusses the background and significance of this study, reviews the current status of overseas and domestic research, and introduces the major research subjects and methods of this paper. Chapter2is the overview of theories of personalized reading, mainly introducing the concept and feature of teaching personalized reading, and also discussing the theoretical basis of the thesis. Chapter3discusses the current status and downside in teaching personalized reading. Firstly it explores the role of students playing in the low efficiency in reading for current high school Chinese studies. Then it investigates the responsibility in teachers for problems in personalized reading from the following five aspects, utilitarianism, inflexible teaching approaches that suppress the individuality of students, incapability to cultivate an interest of students in reading, as well as overemphasizing in class reading. Chapter4explores the teaching strategy for personalized reading that could be feasible and effective in high school Chinese studies, which is composed of the following aspects:cultivation of individualized reading habits, respect in students’ personal selections in reading, updating the idea of "teaching" versus "learning", and encouraging criticisms during reading. Chapter5summarizes and concludes the thesis.
