A Study On The Historical Data Of Track And Field Sports In Dunhuang

Tunhuangology is not only a mixture of a variety of disciplines. It has a very clear plot line, which is a combination of all the information about Dunhuang. It may be much more exact if it is called Dunhuang studies. According to Professor Liu Jinbao, Tunhuangology is a research which takes Dunhuang grottoes, Dunhuang posthumous writing and theories as a line, and takes the history of Dunhuang as the research object. As for Dunhuang sports, it refers to the preserved physical cultural information, relics and monuments about the ancient human sports activitiesfound in Dunhuang mogao grottoes, frescoes and archaeological findings about the surrounding areas, including the remains of sumo, acrobatics, qigong and so on.In a strict sense, to name it Dunhuang track and field is not very accurate. In fact, track and field sports in Dunhuang we talk about today is only a framework of that in ancient China through studying and analyzing Dunhuang’s historical data, as a detailed point of Dunhuang sports study. An in-depth research of physical activities such as running, jumping and throwing was made in order to analyze and summarize those in ancient China. All of those are generally called track and field in the end. Although track and field sports recorded in Dunhuang murals and posthumous writing in ancient China in very different from that in modern Olympic Games, they have a lot of similarities in historical shape and source.The paper adopted literature review, logic analysis and fieldwork method as its research methods. It aimed to fill in the blank of the history material concerning "track and field" movement in the Middle Ages in Ancient China by classifying the movement patterns of Dunhuang "track and field", and then to sort out the overall developing process of it, hoping to restore what the Ancient China’s "track and field" should be.Based on the analysis of the literature of Dunhuang "track and field" history, the paper sorted out and completed the historical process of ancient China’s "track and field", finding that the manifestations of "track and field" are different in different historical periods because of people’s various needs and different material basis.
