Major is an important factor that affects individual career planning. Major selection isrelated to the individual’s future and destiny. Inappropriate selection may affect joborientation and individual employment. China is a developing country. Its education resourceis very limited. Major education should still be finished at school. How to make the studentsgood at some fields so as to avoid the waste of the education resource is a reality problem. Ifnot choosing the major properly, the students will waste their lives. And it is a waste ofeducation resource for the whole country. The vocational high school students are youngwhen they enter the school. They have little knowledge on the major. They are seldom ornever taught how to choose a proper major. At present, there is a large amount of research onthe major selection of the fresh university students. Their major selection is paid attention toby the society and their parents. But there is little research on that of vocational high schoolstudents because they are neglected. So their major selection should more be directed andstudied. It’s really necessary to study the status of the major selection of vocational highschool students, analysis the existing problems and find out some ways to solve them. It hassome theoretical and practical significance.Based on some vocational interest theories, this article adopted the “Questionnaire ofHolland Vocational Interest” and the “Questionnaire of the Major Selection of VocationalHigh School Students” by the writer. According to the result of the questionnaire survey on1096vocational high school students in Penglai Vocational High School, the writer analysesthe status of major selection of vocational high school students to find out the factors thatinfluence the major selection and the major satisfaction of vocational high school students andto explore the regularity factors in the specific work. The article is supposed to provide somereferences on major selection to the students and to provide some suggestions on how toimprove the major satisfaction to the vocational high schools. The result shows that currentlythere are cold and popular majors among vocational students, and there is large differencebetween male and female. They are short of major knowledge. The aim of the candidates isnot clear. When they select majors, they are more influenced by their major interests、theothers around them and easy employment. The students are not positive in the major selection.They are always depending on others. They don’t pay enough attention to it. And they don’t know a lot about their subject abilities. They are passive in professional learning. All thesecause the students’ major dissatisfaction. Most students haven’t received the guidance ofmajor selection. The selected major type is not consistent with his personality type. Vocationalhigh school students’ major selection lacks of scientific. Therefore, in this paper, somevaluable suggestions are further offered on the major selection of vocational high schoolstudents. Under the premise of full attention to major selection, they should think carefully allof their career interests, subject abilities and specialties, their personalities and theiremployment opportunities. Combined with the social reality, the need for the nation buildingand the prospect of the career development, they should refer to the views of teachers andparents. They should have correct view of cold and popular major. Ideally, every student canchoose the most suitable major for their own. Meanwhile social education administrativedepartments, school teachers and parents should give them sufficient and scientific servicesand guidance. Especially the school should bear the responsibility to guide the students’majorselection.The major selection of vocational high school students is affected by many factors. Thegovernment, the school, the teachers, the parents and the students themselves shouldcooperate each other so that each student can choose a proper major.
