With the deepening reform of physical education curriculum, teaching methods in vocational colleges are moving in the standard and scientific direction. As a reflection of modem teaching concept, inquiry learning is a new learning approach, in which students are considered the center, and their interest in learning is stressed. This approach will improve students’ practical ability and skills, train their innovative spirit and practical ability, stimulate their desire in exploration and innovation, and in the long run, help students form lifetime sports ability. Inquiry learning is open, subjective, comprehensive and practical, thus it is valuable and will become the important idea and practice with the emphasis on students’ inquiry learning today. For this reason, by using inquiry learning in teaching bowling optional course, this article attempts to explore whether the use of inquiry learning can effectively improve students’ physical quality, and to make students find, consider, and solve questions in the learning process to deepen their understanding of the technical movements, to accelerate the learning process, to improve students’ movement skills, and to a certain extent, to provide the reference and experimental support for the reform of PE teaching in vocational colleges.Literature review, experiment, interview and statistics methods are adopted in this article. Findings are as follows:1. Inquiry learning is in accordance with teaching bowling optional course in vocational colleges, and it is advantageous to achieve the classroom teaching goals. It is conducive to define the roles of teachers and students and to cultivate students’ innovation consciousness. Therefore, it is necessary to use inquiry learning in bowling optional class teaching.2. As a point-cut of students’ interest, inquiry learning improves students’ interest in learning, cultivates their ability, increases the density of classroom practice through cooperation to promote the development of college students’ physical quality. Students’ speed quality, endurance quality and the explosive force are found improved significantly.3. Through inquiry learning, students understand clearly the concept of bowling technique and action. Inquiry learning helps shorten the process of learning and improve students’ bowling skills through their discovery and solution of problems. Experimental results show that students’ bowling scores increased significantly.
