With the advent of information era, the individual learning ability has become one of the most basic survival skills. The high school students are in an important stage of forming the autonomous learning ability, the physics of autonomous learning can especially cultivate students’ creative thinking ability; then improve the students’ independent consciousness. In recent years, both of the domestic and foreign education researchers have made extensive theoretical and experimental research on the relevant theories of autonomous learning; thus have accumulated a lot of practical experience related to autonomous learning theory. However, the current Chinese exam-oriented education system pays attention to imparting knowledge, blindly ignores the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability. Therefore, cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability becomes an important task during the process of physics teaching. This study examined the current situation of high school students’ physical autonomous learning ability. The study attempts to answer the four research questions,i.e.:(1) the overall trend of high school students’ physical autonomous learning ability;(2) the differences in students’ autonomous learning ability between the students of different proficiency level;(3) the differences in students’ autonomous learning ability between male and female students;(4) the relationship between students’ physical autonomous learning ability and some related multiple variables. According to the above questions, this research adopted the way of combining quantitative research and qualitative research, investigated 300 students in senior grade one from the affiliated high school of Jiangxi normal university and Nanchang Hongdu middle school. In the quantitative research, the questionnaire consists of five dimensions: learning motivation and attitude, learning awareness and habits, learning strategies and methods, learning space and time, and teachers’ role. SPSS19.0 was adopted foranalysis of the data. In the qualitative research, four interview objects were invited to participate in a one-to-one semi-structured interview in order to supplement and verify the result of quantitative research. This research has obtained the following results: The overall degree of high students’ physical autonomous learning ability is generally low; High school students’ physical autonomous learning ability is significantly correlated with their physics proficiency, and the students of high proficiency level tend to learn autonomously than those of low proficiency level; There is no significant correlation in students’ physical autonomous learning ability between female and male students, but the boys’ physical autonomous learning ability is slightly higher than the overall level of girls; The major factors affecting the high school students’ physical autonomous learning ability: learning motivation and attitude, learning awareness and habits, learning strategies and methods, study time and space, teachers’ role; The learning strategies and methods and the role of teachers have the largest effect on cultivating students’ physics autonomous learning ability.Based on the above research results, this study argues that good autonomous learning ability should be qualified with learning motivation, learning ability, learning methods and learning awareness. Therefore, in the process of physics teaching, the teacher should motivate the students’ autonomous learning motivation, cultivate students’ interest of learning; the teacher should also transform the teaching mode and offer more student-centered learning; Creating a good classroom environment and instruct them to master the learning method. In addition, based on the teaching case of“friction”, this study digests the above strategies into the teaching activities. After practical testing, those strategies do help to improve students’ autonomous learning ability. The author hopes to provide a beneficial reference for the reform of high school physics teaching by some theoretical exploration and tentative practice.,.
