The rapid development of the information society has brought a lot of opportunities and convenience to people, but also on the people’s information quality and information capacity had been put forward higher requirements. To adapt to the development of the information society, it is crucial to improve citizens’ information literacy. but the citizens’ information literacy should be trained from childhood. Therefore, information literacy education in primary and secondary school is gradually drawing more attention in all areas of society. However, the start of information literacy education in our country is late, and primary and secondary information literacy education is only a kind of education of simple computer knowledge and skills. In short, the true meaning of information literacy education in our country has not been carried out yet.As we all know, America is the most developed countries in the information industry development, at the same time it is the first country of carrying out primary and secondary information literacy education in the world. Today information literacy education in American schools has made significant achievements. By studying the development of history; relevant laws and policies; organization; education objectives; curriculum; implementation strategies; teachers’ training in American schools’ information literacy education, we fully summarize their experience, in order to provide reference for China’s primary and secondary information literacy education.This paper is divided into three parts:The first part is propose issues and research significance. Including research background, research significance, research methods, domestic and foreign research literature, and definition of three concepts.The second part is specially research information literacy education in American schools. Firstly, introduce the history of information literacy education in American schools. Secondly, analyse the legal and policy of information literacy education for schools, and describe the organization of information literacy education in the United States, including government organizations and non-governmental organizations. Finally, analyse the specific implementation of information literacy education in American schools, including educational objectives, course content, curriculum, implementation strategies, teachers’ training.The third part is summarize the successful experience and propose enlightenment to our country. Through the comprehensive analysis of information literacy education in American schools, we summarize its successful experience, propose six aspects worthy recommendations for our country.
