Gender equality issue is obvious in the whole educational system of Ethiopia, especially in the higher education. In order to solve the gender inequality, Ethiopia has put out a series of policies which aimed at eliminating gender inequality. To some extent, it has improved the situation of women in higher education but there are still many significant gender inequalities between men and women. In higher education female students are not treated as equally as male students at education starting point, process and achievement. In some majors or subjects, female students are much fewer than those male students, which comes as serious gender imbalance. Enrollment in higher education, the number of women is much lower than that of men, and women in the educational process also have high dropout rates. The differences of graduation rates between women and men are very poor. In a conclusion, gender equality has become an important challenge to realize the sustainable development of higher education in Ethiopia.Based on introducing the development of Ethiopian higher education, this article mainly focuses on the analysis of the present situation of gender equality problem of higher education in Ethiopia and explores the reasons for the gender equality issues arising from Ethiopian social, economic and educational condition, etc. Finally, the paper combs the Ethiopian government and colleges’ policies and measures to promote gender equality in higher education and makes perspective and hope in the future of gender equality.The essay is composed of five parts. Part 1 starts with problems, then it shows respectively significance, definition, literature review and research methods for analysis and elaboration. Paper-based follow-up study to pave the way.Part 2 has carried on the detailed elaboration from the three periods of the development history of Ethiopian higher education, that is, in the period of Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime, Ethiopian leather political power and the period of great development of higher education.Part 3 analyzes the gender equality issues in higher education enrollment opportunity, the learning process and the results of the three aspects of higher education from the gender equality issues of Ethiopia. And it shows an example of Hawassa University, through enrollment, dropout rate, professional male and female students, graduation rates and other data distributions compared to stand by.Part 4 discusses the reasons for gender equality in higher education in Ethiopia, including the influence of traditional culture, economic level constraints, inadequate education system, social security and other factors.Part 5 mainly elaborates the Ethiopia policies and measures to promote the gender equality of higher education, and gives a brief evaluation of the effectiveness of the policy. Last part is the conclusion.
