As the carrier of geographic information, geographic images focus on the geography spatial and regional characteristics.The geography textbooks for middle school published by the People’s Education Press contain a large number and variety of geographic images. Besides, with the requirements of new Geography Curriculum Standards and teaching practice in geography class, teachers should apply to the geographic images to cultivate students’ innovation, practical ability and skills of using geographic images in middle school. Making good use of geographic images in geography teaching, teachers can stimulate students’ interest in learning geography and strengthen the teaching effect with presenting geographical knowledge and features and laws directly. So it is urgent for teachers to do research about the geographical images teaching.Based on the object of study of some geography teachers and students in 16 middle schools in Wuwei, this paper analyzes many problems deeply about the present situation of geographic images application in geography teaching through questionnaire and interview. When it comes to the reasons of the problem, it derives from students’ low interests in learning geographic images, attitude problems, bad study habits and different learning abilities as well as teachers’ influence.Aiming at the present situation and problems of geographic images application in geography teaching, the author analyzes the geographic images in geography textbooks in middle school firstly, then puts forward some feasible suggestions from the perspective of teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. In a word, the author makes a thorough inquiry schematically and qualitatively about geography teachers’ professional qualities and skills and students’ interests,attitude,learning habits and abilities to utilize the geographic images to achieve a goal that the geographic images can make a great difference to the teaching practice sufficiently and effectively, which can improve teachers’ ability to use geographic images teaching and play more important role in the quality of geography teaching in middle school. Meanwhile, it also can develop students’ skills to use geographic images and improve their comprehensive qualities.
