The professional development of teacher is a process from immature to relatively mature. Generally, there are three stages in teachers’ professional development, which are novice teacher, proficient teacher and expert teacher. It takes a long time for a novice teacher to grow into a proficient teacher, which requires a great amount of teaching practice. However, many proficient teachers stagnate at their stage and stop growing into expert teachers. Previous researches focus mainly on the novice teachers’ development and expert teachers’ development, regardless of the proficient teachers’.Proficient teachers are very important in the teachers group and play a crucial role in improving the whole quality of education and teaching.Based on the summary and reflection of previous researches, this research deeply analysis the connotation and features of proficient teachers in middle school. This research adopts case study method, chooses three proficient teachers in L middle school in SuiNing county, XuZhou as objects. By observing and interviewing, I try to get to know the present situation of proficient teachers’ professional development, to summarize and analysis the factors that influence proficient teachers’ professional development.This research finds out that the factors that influence proficient teachers’ professional development are multiple. Among them, the internal factors arepersonality characteristics, professional skills, mental quality, role conflict and role ambiguity; the external factors are teachers’ income, the teacher evaluation system, the school culture, social pressure etc. In the light of the factors that influence proficient teachers’ professional development, this research puts forward the suggests that promote proficient teachers’ professional development from three aspects. Firstly, a supportive external environment should be created: make related education policy and supervise it, rationalize the role expectation of proficient teachers, change the current teacher evaluation system. Secondly, warm and harmonious school environment is the guarantee: create supportive working environment, create research-supported environment, care about the mental and physical health of teachers. Finally, the proficient teachers themselves should act actively :establish the concept of life-long learning and teaching reflection, build teacher practical community, improve the level of scientific research and innovation.
