Report On The Chinese Character Writing Errors Of Thai Chinese School Secondary Students

In recent years, with closer relationships in Thailand and China, many aspects of political,economic and cultural exchanges have been ever more frequent. "Chinese Hot" in Thailand is still heating up. The major colleges and universities, primary and secondary schools in Thailand are established for Chinese lessons and a lot of Chinese training institutions. The Chinese teaching presents an unprecedented prosperity. However, the Chinese character has traditionally been a fundamental problem of overseas students studying Chinese. It is the problems that exist in the teaching of Chinese characters, which make Chinese characters learning become the bottleneck of overseas students.The author is taking the opportunity for Chinese teacher volunteers in Phuket Thaihua Asean Wittaya School of Thailand, collected a lot of data about students writing errors and summarized the types of errors. Combining with questionnaire survey of Chinese characters learning, the author made synchronic and diachronic comparison on the error types of the three classes, analyzed the cause of errors and put forward the corresponding teaching strategies.This article consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly introduced the current situation of Chinese language education in Thailand and the research purpose and significance of this paper. Also the present research situation of Chinese character writing errors in Thailand, as well as the theoretical basis, research materials and analytical methods.The second part is the Chinese character learning situation questionnaire survey. There are numerous differences in the Chinese character writing level, learning background,learning psychology and learning strategies of the students in the three classes. Thus the error types’ rate of the three classes is different. This is the reason why we carry on the questionnaire survey this part. Through the questionnaire survey the author can know the individual factors such as learning background, learning psychology of the students, analyzethe similarities and differences of the students in the three classes, provide basis and direction for analyzing the cause of all kinds of errors occur and put forward the corresponding Chinese characters teaching strategies.In the third part, the Chinese character writing errors are divided into five types:(1)Strokes errors,(2) Errors of parts add, remove and replace,(3) Scheme structure errors,(4)Parts deformation errors,(5) Similar writing pattern and sound substitution errors. Based on the percentage comparison analysis on the types of errors, the author finds that Stroke errors and Errors of parts add, remove and replace account for a large proportion of the five types.Meanwhile, the author makes synchronic and diachronic comparison on the error types of the three classes. On the basic of combining with questionnaire survey results and errors analysis results, the author analyzed the reasons for the Chinese character writing errors of the Thai Chinese school students:(1) The characteristics of the Chinese character itself,(2) Negative transfer of native language,(3) The imperfection of Chinese characters teaching,(4) The learning characteristics of the students and the learning motivation.In order to ensure that the results of this paper more universal, the author has carried on the interview investigations to 10 Thai Chinese schools and their Chinese teachers, including Phuket Thaihua Asean Wittaya School. The author finds that although the Thai Chinese school is numerous, and has a long history, but there are still many problems:(1) The uneven development of Thai Chinese school,(2) Lack of professional Chinese teachers,(3) The teaching materials various but lack of systematic,(4) Students lack of initiative in Chinese learning.Aiming at above problems we put forward some Chinese characters teaching strategies in the fifth part of the paper:(1) To strengthen the teaching of basic knowledge, from simple to complex,(2) Contrastive teaching method,(3) Induction combined with practice,(4) To enhance teaching interesting. At the same time we put forward some suggestions for the majority of Thai Chinese schools:(1) Attaches great importance to the teaching of Chinese characters in the aspect of the curriculum,(2) Chinese teachers should strengthen cooperation with Thai teachers, to develop local Chinese teachers,(3) Using Chinese textbooks that inaccordance with the characteristics of Thai students and systematically,(4) To perfect each rules and regulations, standardize the teaching routine, and establish rewards and punishments mechanism. Hope the above suggestions are helpful to reduce the Chinese writing errors of Thai students, improving the condition of Chinese education in Thai Chinese school and raising the level of Chinese teaching in Thailand.
