Cultivation of the student’s Chinese language proficiency shall include the cultivation of Chinese character writing ability. Teaching Chinese character writing skills not only can improve student’s writing ability, but also is the essential foundation in the cultivation of student’s language ability. Chinese character teaching is an important part in Chinese language teaching. However, due to its high difficulty, student may easily have fear of difficulty. Chinese character teaching is always the bottleneck of Chinese language teaching for foreigners. In recent years, a growing number of front-line teachers and some specialist and scholars start to pay attention to the research of Chinese character teaching. The study of Chinese character errors will bring benefit for the improvement of Chinese character teaching quality and it can be the beginning of Chinese character study.The writer once taught in Srinaqarindra The Princess Mother School Phuket. It was found that during the teaching process, whatever in the middle school period or high school period, students frequently made mistakes in Chinese character writing and the error types are various. This led to Thai students’ low study efficiency and affected the progress of Chinese language teaching. Therefore, under the theoretical directions of cognitive theory, contrastive analysis, error analysis, with collected linguistic data, this paper describes and analyzes the Chinese character errors made by students from middle school stage and high school stage in Srinaqarindra The Princess Mother School Phuket. It was found that in their writing process of Chinese characters, there are a lot of deformation of strokes and deletion and error of strokes. For both middle school stage and high school stage students, the above phenomenon commonly exist and fossilization appeared. Besides the above, through the analysis of collected data, it was found that “strokes effect” exists in Thai students’ cognitive process of Chinese characters and the cross-linguistic and intralingual negative transfer are the reasons for the serious errors in Chinese characters writing of Thai students. For this reason, in Chinese character writing teaching process, teachers shall pay attention to strokes teaching and introduce the Chinese character writing features and the combination rules of strokes and parts. As for points easily influenced by intralingual and cross-linguistic negative transfer, contrastive analysis method may be used in teaching. With analytical research of writing errors of Thai students in Chinese character writing, it is expected that this paper may provide practical and reference significance for Chinese character teaching for Thai students and avoidance of strokes errors in Chinese character writing.
