English proverbs not only has a long history, huge quantity, rich content, profound meaning, but also has different rhythm, concise and vivid form. Since the 1980 s, many scholars in our country has carried on a effective research in English Proverbs on the aspect of origin, culture, philosophy, classification, rhetoric, translation and so on. They had published a series of academic works, edited numerous English proverb dictionaries, also published a number of journal articles.Throughout these studies, we found that researches on the application of English proverbs in English words and sentences teaching is still relatively weak, especially at the elementary stage, there are still many problems worth our further research. Therefore, based on PEP Primary English Student’s Book, this paper discusses the use of English proverbs in notional words, function words, declarative sentence, imperative sentence teaching, in order to break through the traditional teaching mode, promote the further reform and development of basic English words and sentences teaching.Firstly, review the domestic and foreign relevant research status of English proverbs and introduce the chunk theory, monitoring theory and sentence-based theory, so as to demonstrate the feasibility and compatibility of this study. Secondly, look through the teaching materials and grasp the distribution and proportion of English words and sentences. Thirdly, collect the confusion and difficulties of English words and sentences teaching in primary school. Then, corresponding to teaching problem, systemize English proverbs and find specific type and typical characteristics of English proverbs. Finally, carry on the concrete explanation of using objects and using method. By exploring the use of English proverbs we get the following conclusions:First, in terms of notional words, abundant semantic of proverbs can help students grasp the meaning and usage of specific notional words better.Second, in terms of function words, peculiar rhythm of English proverbs is helpful for students to distinguish the similar function words and guarantee the study effect.Third, in terms of declarative sentences, English proverbs provide authentic and concise expression.It is convenient for students to express their views and opinions more clearly using five basic sentence patterns.Fourth, in terms of imperative sentence, English proverbs contain the illocutionary force, which not only can make students know the pragmatic range of imperative sentence, but also can shape and cultivate students’ good behavior.
