In the 21st century, the era of network information, as fast as the pace of opening to the outside world, our country’s higher education and the education environment are also facing changes. Independent colleges, as an important part of higher education in China, should seriously consider how to build a development strategy to promote the rapid development of colleges and universities. Actually the independent colleges should construct education development strategy and give full play to their strengths to form their own brand characteristics, combining with the opportunities and challenges.As the increasingly urgent demand of the public for higher education, Jiangxi A independent college is making rapid development, but there are still some problems. At the same time, competition from the general public universities or other institutions of education is increasing. This paper starts from the theory related strategic management and research literature related independent colleges, then gives a sufficient analysis on the internal and external environment faced by the college. About the external environment, this paper use PEST to analyze respectively on the policy environment, economic environment, social environment, and technology environment, and concludes that its opportunities mainly has the following three aspects, namely the supporting from national policy, the popularization of higher education and the increased visibility of reputation society. Porter five analysis model is used to respectively analyze five aspects of the higher education industry, they are the potential menace, the bargaining power of buyer, the bargaining power of the seller, the threat of substitutes, and competition existing in colleges and universities in the industry. It is concluded that the threat the college faced has the following three aspects, namely more competition on getting students, growing competition in colleges and universities, and the threat of substitutes. Through the analysis of the internal facilities outlay, teachers’ profession and the curriculum construction for the college, it is concluded that it mainly has the advantages of the perfect educational equipment, flexible mechanism and strong driving force for development; while existing disadvantages with limited funding sources, high admissions cost, big teachers’ liquidity and limited teaching level and management ability.Following, use SWOT to match these factors come SO Strategy, WO Strategy, ST Strategy and WT Strategy. By comparing the four strategic, combining with the actual situation, SO strategy is chosen as the most suitable for the development of the college, targeted for its development strategy. In order to achieve the optimal strategy, this paper chooses the road to develop characteristics, branding and talent power. At the same time, it is necessary to provide feasibility plan, strengthen the school’s strategic planning and implementation, build plural operation pattern and perfect the corporate internal governance structure, in order to make A independent college, in the age of opportunities and challenges, have a positive and effective response to the college’s transformation and achieve rapid, stable and sustainable development of the independent college.
